‘Magnificent Jewels’ now on display in New York

From April 8-12, Christie’s will hold public viewings of 72 “Magnificent Jewels” to be sold on April 13 in New York, including a very special pendant-watch, and a half-dozen diamond creations with pre-sale estimates of more than $1 million.

“The Underground Railway” Watch

One standout piece with rich ties to New York is an antique Tiffany & Co. diamond and enamel ‘Subway’ pendant-watch, offered to the public for the first time.

This Magnificent Jewel was commissioned to commemorate the opening of the New York Subway System and contains soil taken from the groundbreaking ceremony behind the watch crystal. It’s engraved with the initials of Georgie Anne McDonald, daughter of John B. McDonald, the architect of New York’s first subway line, along with the statement “Some of the earth from the first shovelful, taken out by mayor Van Wyck, at the Breaking of ground for the Underground Railway, March 24, 1900.”

This rare Subway pendant-watch has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 – 30,000.

The Fuchsia Rose

Taking center stage at this year’s auction is “The Fuchsia Rose,” an 8.82 carat fancy intense purple-pink modified pear cut diamond measuring 17.56 x 10.69 x 6.81 mm with potentially internally flawless clarity, set into a platinum ring, accompanied by two colorless side stones with a total weight of 6.10 carats. The Fuchsia Rose has a pre-sale estimate of $4 – 6 million.
